Research & Education

Since the CLF was first established in 1969, we have been committed to finding the answers to liver disease and sharing those answers with Canadians living with or at risk of liver disease and the health care professionals who care for them. Research and Education are two of our most important priorities and we are proud of the contributions we have made and the progress we have been a part of over the last 45+ years.

The CLF supports the work of liver researchers across Canada through our grant program. To find out more about our research grants or ongoing projects, click here or follow the links on the left under 'Research'

Thanks to the findings of Canadian researchers and their colleagues throughout the world, we are able to provide comprehensive educational materials covering the signs, symptoms and treatment of many of the common forms of liver disease as well as a variety of helpful tips on precautions or healthy choices that can help you avoid liver disease.

People look for liver health information in different ways however and the CLF strives to provide the facts in the places and in the formats that are the most convenient and accessible. In 2016, we welcomed more than 2.2 million visitors to Over the past few years, we have seen a continual increase in our website traffic (2015, 2 million visitors and in 2014 1.8 million)  showing that this is a preferred way for people to access health information. The decline in the volume of email inquiries and calls to our National Help Line -- 2,230 in 2016, compared to 2,447 in 2015 and 2,700 in 2014 --  is further evidence that people prefer to go online to find answers. We have also seen a reduction in the number of printed materials requested by individuals, community agencies, clinics, hospitals and doctors’ offices. In 2016, we distributed 30,000 printed pieces as compared to 50,000 in 2015 and 60,000 in 2014.
